ARCHITECTURE NOMAD Founder Participates in International Adaptive Reuse Workshop in Florence
FLORENCE, ITALY – Christopher Mancia, Founder of Architecture Nomad PLLC and ARCNOMA, participated in the fifth edition of the "Reuse the Ruin" Architecture Summer Workshop held in Florence. The intensive program, organized by Reuse Italy, focused on the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic heritage sites, specifically the reconstruction of the Roman Theater of Fiesole.
The workshop provided a platform for international collaboration between architects and scholars to address the technical and theoretical challenges of abandoned ruins. Participants engaged in a multidisciplinary experience that included site inspections of the archaeological area of Fiesole and design sessions under the supervision of international firms such as Garcés De Seta Bonet and Bak Gordon Architects.
The program centered on the integration of modern architectural interventions within historic masonry, By participating in this global exchange, Mancia further developed the research methodologies utilized by ARCNOMA in New York, particularly concerning the preservation of historic fabric and the implementation of high performance building science in sensitive urban contexts.
"Engaging with the history and theory of restoration in a context like Florence provides critical insights that are applicable to the adaptive reuse challenges we face in New York," says Christopher Mancia. "The ability to study different methods of architectural conservation alongside colleagues from around the world strengthens our approach to creating resilient and contextually aware buildings."
The findings from the Florence workshop will be integrated into the firm's ongoing research into the Architecture of Belonging. This research explores how forgotten historical heritage can be revitalized to serve contemporary community needs while maintaining structural and cultural integrity.
